Lent 2 Wednesday

Daily Prayer for Early Evening

The Third Wednesday of Lent

MARCH 3, A. D. 2021

Prelude

"Der am Kreuz" by Gottfried August Homilius

Invocation and Versicle

In the name of the Father and of the ✠ Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
( A candle may be lighted)
Let my prayer rise before You as incense,
    The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

Phos Hilaron

Joyous Light of glory,
    Of the immortal Father,
Heavenly, holy, blessed Jesus Christ.
    We have come to the setting of the sun
And we look to the evening light.
    We sing to God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy of being praised
    With pure voices forever.
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
    The universe proclaims Your glory.

Psalm:  Psalm 22:23-31 (Antiphon: verse 22)
I will tell of your name to my brothers;
    in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
You who fear the Lord, praise him!
    All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him,
    and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!

For he has not despised or abhorred
    the affliction of the afflicted,
and he has not hidden his face from him,
    but has heard, when he cried to him.
From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
    my vows I will perform before those who fear him.
The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek him shall praise the Lord!
May your hearts live forever!
    All the ends of the earth shall remember
    and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
    shall worship before you.
For kingship belongs to the Lord,
    and he rules over the nations.
All the prosperous of the earth eat and worship;
    before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
    even the one who could not keep himself alive.
Posterity shall serve him;
    it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation;
they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn,
    that he has done it.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
    and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
    is now and will be forever. Amen.
I will tell of your name to my brothers;
    in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:

Meditation on The Reading

Apostles' Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life ✠ everlasting. Amen.

Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Collect for the Second Sunday in Lent

Almighty God, because You know that of ourselves we have no strength, keep us both outwardly and inwardly, that we may be defended from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
    Amen.

Other Collects

Heavenly Father, you forgive us all our sins richly and daily and you do not deal with us according to our iniquities. We implore you, give us truly thankful hearts and open our lips, that we may praise you for your grace and mercy, and confess your name and Word; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
    Amen.

Merciful God, we humbly implore you to cast the bright beams of your light upon your Church that we, being instructed by the doctrine of the blessed apostles, may walk in the light of your truth and at length attain to the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
    Amen.

Almighty, merciful, and most gracious God and Father, we earnestly implore you to turn the hearts of all who have forsaken the Faith once delivered to your Church, those who have wandered from it or are in doubt or temptation through the corruption of your truth; merciful visit them and turn them again that in singleness of heart they may take pleasure in your Word and be made wise to salvation; through faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord.
    Amen.

Final Collect

Lord Jesus, stay with us, for the evening is at hand and the day is past. Be our constant companion on the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope among us, that we may recognize You as You are revealed in the Scriptures and in the breaking of the bread. Grant this for Your name’s sake.
    Amen.

Bendicamus

Let us bless the Lord;
    Thanks be to God.
